So Much More!

Well ladies, you have spoken, and we have responded to your request!  We now have so many more ways to serve and support you in your weight loss efforts.

It is the spiritual that is often missing, and it is the spiritual that we have to offer!  Do you ever eat to “fill a void” or to “escape from the world”?  You are dynamic and complex, existing of emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual components.  Addressing one wihout addressing the other can lead to frustration and a sense of failure.  Addressing the whole self is a much more fulfilling and effective approach.

Women’s Way now offers Mind/Body/Spirit sessions for all women.  Each week offers something a little different, from yoga and chanting to mindful eating, and so much more!  Check out our calendar of classes: www.womenswaywmc.com/services/mbs.

Also, it is time for the popular Weight Loss Journey course to begin in July.  It looks like many of our participants will be in chairs this time, so if you have always wanted to participate, but were nervous about sitting on the floor, it’s your time!  Register today at www.womenswaywmc.com/services/weight-loss-courses.

Finally, our beloved personal trainer, Frederic Leyd, is hosting is own Lower Back Seminar in downtown Knoxville in July.  If you suffer in pain, this seminar is for you!  Learn more at www.fredericleyd.com.

Back to Basics – Fresh Foods From the Earth

It’s spring – a time to eat lighter!  Consider getting more of your foods from the garden this season (or farmer’s markets or the produce section of the grocery store).   Having a piece of fruit for snack is a much better option that having a bag of chips.   Or how about having beans and rice for lunch instead of a burger?

There is a growing trend towards eating more fresh foods from the earth – and for very good reason.  Learn why this movement is important and how it can help you lose weight.  Rent or download the documentary “Food, Inc.”.

Girl Scout Cookie Time!

Hi Ladies,

Are you struggling with Girl Scout cookies at your house, too? This is a sneaky situation. Those cute little girls… money going to a good cause… it’s so hard to resist that which comes around only once a year…

My advice to you? Don’t do it! Those cookies have a way of disappearing as if  by magic. You open a box, have a munch, look down, and GONE! There are many other charitable organizations that don’t require you to sabotage your weight loss efforts.

Keep the snacking controlled, planned, and within healthy limits.

Chocolate? Oh Yes!

Is it even realistic to avoid chocolate this weekend?  OK.  For some, it is.  And more power to those few!  But for most, forget it.  Chocolate is going to be a definite part of the Valentine’s season.  Make sure that the moment of indulgence does not spiral out of control into many moments of not only indulgence, but also downright guilt about it all.  Think about it: have the chocolate if you can agree to fully enjoy it (fully meaning no guilt).  Chances are that you will be able to enjoy it the first, or maybe even the second or third time.  If the chocolate eating begins to race out of control, chances are you aren’t actually enjoying it anymore.

Want to have a little chocolate and not feel guilty? Learn how to balance it with the other things you eat that day.  Chocolate is mostly fat with added sugar (carbs). Enjoy your chocolate, but steer clear of other high-fat foods (like butter, oil, fried foods, nuts, cream-based dishes, etc.) as well as other high-carb items (like bread, pasta, rice, crackers, cake, etc.). Focus on lean proteins and veggies for balance.

Feel Like a Failure?

Did you set weight loss resolutions this year that haven’t quite panned out the way you had imagined?  Do you feel like a failure once again?  This failure mentality is often at the core of the weight loss process – but it doesn’t have to be.  Each failed attempt is an opportunity to learn a little more about what doesn’t work for you.   The bottom line is NOT that you are just a failure and can’t lose weight.  The problem is in the approach you are taking.  For some reason our culture loves the punishment approach – keep punishing yourself until you get it right.  Restrict your foods.  Force yourself to exercise.  And beat yourself up when you don’t do these things perfectly.  Keep doing it this way if you want to feel like a failure over and over again.

For a different outcome, try a different approach.  Detach your sense of self-worth from your weight loss efforts.  Also  realize that your ability to succeed with your weight is a very different animal than other successes in your life.  This arena requires an entirely different rulebook – a rulebook that is not based in logic, but in love (self-love).

Did Your Resolutions Fail to Stick?

Every year millions of Americans set out to lose weight, eat right, and exercise every day as part of their unrealistic New Year’s Resolutions.  The problem is that these outlandish resolutions don’t stick.  Change happens in small doses over time.  What is interesting is that taking it slow is in fact the fastest way to reach your goals.

OK, so what now?  Your resolutions didn’t stick.  Simply time to alter your perspective and take a new approach.  Tenacity doesn’t mean that you plough through straight to the finish on the first try.  You try.  You bust.  You try. You bust. Try, try again. It is actually the “failures” that provide the most insight into the path to success. Learn what doesn’t work for you. No judgment.  No guilt. No shame. It didn’t work.  So what?  That just means it’s time for a new approach. Try something new… and let us know if you need any help or suggestions along the way…

Holiday Stresses

I was going through my folder of archived information about mind/body/spirit approaches to better living and I came across this 11/18/09 piece in the health section of the New York Times. The take-away from the article was that more and more research is confirming the link between exercise and the ability to withstand the effects of stress – not just in the body, but also the mind and the emotions. The more we exercise, the more our bodies and brains are able to resist the physical and psychological effects of stress. During this holiday and end-of-the-year season, there are some unavoidable stressors like over commitment, financial pressures, family strains and even days on end of gloomy weather. This article reminds me that getting moving is not only about weight loss or maintenance, but about my ability to cope – mind, body, and soul.

The Difficulty (and Necessity) of Change

The weight loss journey demands change.  Changing your relationship with food…changing what you eat…changing your schedule to fit in exercise…changing sizes…sometimes even changing major aspects of life like jobs or relationships.  Many women give up on the weight loss journey because change can be SO OVERWHELMING.  Brave few carry on through the initial stages of loss and discomfort to experience the rewarding results of change.

TIP: Expect change to happen, and know that it does not have to be hard.  The secret?  Stay focused on your goal and relax into the idea of letting go and allowing change to happen.

Women’s Way has also undergone change this month and is now located on the top floor of the L&N Building downtown, with more space and expanded services.  Come check us out at our upcoming Open House on December 3rd from 4-6pm.

Change how you handle the holidays this year by attending the Women’s Way annual course: Maintaining Your Weight During the Holidays, beginning December 1st.  Contact (865)329-8897 or siri@womenswaywmc.com to register.
