Weight-Loss Programs May Be Tax Deductible
On April 2, 2002, the Internal Revenue Service announced a new policy (IRS Ruling 202-19). Some overweight Americans may now be eligible to deduct the cost of weight-loss programs. You may be able to deduct qualifying expenses as part of medical care. Details about deductibility of weight loss programs are contained in IRS Publication 502, which you may read by following this link: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/ar02.html#en_US_publink1000179034
You may also be eligible for three employee benefits: Medical Savings Accounts, Flexible Spending Accounts, and Health Reimbursement expenses based on a doctor’s recommendation.
Please consult your tax advisor and/or your employer regarding your individual circumstance.
